Festival Cervantino

From the 3rd until the 21st of October, Guanajuato is hosting the 40th Festival Internacional Cervantino.

This festival is a mix of dance, music, culture and theatre from Mexico. And has this year as guest countries : Austria, Switzerland (yes that also was a surprise for me), and Poland.

Posters of Switzerland are actually advertised on the main square of the town. Pretty funny to be so far from home and see pictures of your own country where you wouldn’t expect them.

The inauguration occured on the 3rd of October on the main stage of the Festival called El Alhondigas with a Polish night, starting with a Pianist, followed by a Dance Jazz – band. The Piano was surely a top class one, but hearing a classical Chopin during 45 minutes can get quite boring and do not really convey “fiesta” for most of the crowd ;-) The Modern Jazz – Music dance was on the other hand pretty joyful and warmed up the crowd.

While walking in the street you realize that the police force is not joking at all, although this is more for prevention of course, but still. Bullet jacket, sometimes a helmet and a rifle at hand for the security of the “festivaliers”.

The festival has many stages for which you need to pay an entrance, but also loads of free venues.

Out of my experience, I have seen a great Mexican Folklore with Mariachis and dancers from the Unversity of Guanajuato (see below) as well as a DJ electro set on a field as well as free movies.

The Mexican Folklore had an incredible variety of very colorful costumes with the idea of retracing part of the history of this county.

This Festival attracts a huge amount of people especially at the end of the week, mostly from Mexico but also from outside.

And finally to finish the night dancing, there is a cool salsa place named :
